For an assignment, I was assigned to do branding and video transitions of any brand or company that I wanted to do. I ultimately went with MTV because the company branding has the creative freedom since their a music and reality TV company. I was doing further research of the previous designs that the company has done since they were established in popularity. I enjoyed the funky colours and abstracted concepts that MTV has created for their introductions, bumpers, and lower thirds.
For the introduction, I wanted to keep a modern feel, but keep aspects of what the original MTV introductions had when the company first started. They were originally know as a music production company, and I wanted to keep the original name as well as some of 80s and 90s concepts like the vintage televisions that were standard back then. The reason why I stuck with the space theme was because of the MTV Music Awards and how the company was consistent of music theme throughout the years. Because I wanted to keep the modern feel of the video introduction, I was experimenting with the three-dimensional features on After Effects because of how the panning and zooming is constructed alongside with the multiple aspects has to flow with the space theme.
With the original storyboarding, I was originally going to have two of the same hand pointing to turn on the television and have the screen have MTV throughout its appearance. But after experimentation, I decided to stick with one finger for the suspense of the introduction. And instead of the music notes that was originally planned on the script, I went with objects and animals associated with the internet because I wanted to subtly show that a company that represents music television before is transitioning to the internet phase to give to newer, younger audience.
I wanted to simplify the bumper at the beginning since I wanted to create something that people might not know what to expect. So I decided to have a singer or rapper come into the screen because pop culture is prevalent to MTV and their company branding. I decided to have Post Malone as the main person to be in a bumper since he was starting at his peak of popularity. I drew out separate body and limbs on Photoshop so that I imported the drawn parts and I animate the parts as a whole like he was walking and singing/rapping.
The original concept was going to have the singer or rapper sing to the point that the speech bubble was going to fill up the entire screen to the MTV logo. But I went with one of the stars to fill up the screen into the company logo instead because it is easier to transition into the next scene and stars help match the theme of the background song, Rock Star by Post Malone.
The last part of the video was editing the lower third part of the video. I combined both the elements that was implemented from the introduction video, the static like feeling of the television, and the bumper video, Post Malone himself. The reason why I added a static-like electric guitar in the lower third was because electric guitars were popularly associated with rock stars throughout the years, and Post Malone's song Rock Star implies the same theming.
